CRA Dispute Resolution Across Canada

We handle CRA administrative processes: audits, reassessments, objections, voluntary disclosures, taxpayer relief applications and collections negotiations. We prepare the documentation and the technical arguments, and we deal with the CRA on your behalf as your authorized representative. We are accountants, not lawyers — where a matter requires legal counsel, we tell you early and work with them.

Facing a CRA Dispute Anywhere in Canada? We Can Help.

We are Chartered Professional Accountants. We act as your authorized representative in dealings with the CRA — audits, reassessments, notices of objection, voluntary disclosures, taxpayer relief applications, and negotiations with collections. We prepare the submissions, assemble the evidence, make the technical arguments, and deal with the CRA directly so you don’t have to.
Those are administrative processes, and they are where the large majority of disputes are resolved.
We are not lawyers and we do not provide legal representation. If a matter proceeds past the CRA to the Tax Court of Canada, that requires counsel — and we say so early rather than late, then work alongside your lawyer as the tax technical resource on the file.

Personal and corporate taxpayers needing help to challenge CRA decisions or resolve compliance issues.

Risks of Going Unrepresented

Mishandled CRA correspondence can lead to higher assessed amounts, and a missed objection deadline can permanently close off your right to dispute a reassessment.

Our CRA Dispute Resolution Services Across Canada

01.

Support Through Every CRA Stage

From the first CRA letter through audit, objection, taxpayer relief and collections, we handle the correspondence and the submissions. Where a matter goes beyond the CRA’s administrative process to the Tax Court, we prepare the tax file and work with your legal counsel.

02.

Notice of Objection

We prepare and file formal Notices of Objection for Canadian taxpayers nationwide, building a thorough, evidence-backed case to challenge the CRA’s position.

03.

Voluntary Disclosure Program (VDP)

We guide clients across Canada through the VDP process, helping them correct past compliance failures proactively while minimizing penalties.

04.

Taxpayer Relief Applications

Relief applications are limited to the ten calendar years before the year the request is made, and relief is discretionary — the CRA is not obliged to grant it.

05.

CRA Collections & Debt Repayment Negotiation

When the CRA pursues collection action, we negotiate directly with CRA collections officers to establish manageable arrangements and prevent enforcement escalation.

06.

Tax Court Appeals — Support Alongside Counsel

If your dispute proceeds to the Tax Court of Canada, we work alongside your legal counsel — preparing the tax analysis and supporting records, quantifying the amounts in issue, and acting as the technical resource on the file. We are Chartered Professional Accountants, not lawyers, and we do not provide legal representation.

An appeal to the Tax Court must be filed within 90 days of the CRA’s decision on your objection.

Who This Service Is Designed For

CRA dispute resolution services for every type of Canadian taxpayer

Individual Taxpayers Across Canada

Canadian residents who have received a personal tax audit notice, a T1 reassessment, or a collections letter and need expert guidance on how to respond effectively.

Small & Medium Business Owners

Incorporated and unincorporated Canadian businesses facing corporate tax audits, income reviews, or multi-year reassessments requiring professional representation.

Self-Employed Professionals & Contractors

Freelancers, consultants, and self-employed Canadians whose business expenses, home office claims, or income reporting the CRA has challenged.

Corporations with CRA Reassessments

Canadian corporations that have received reassessments, including disallowed deductions or GST/HST audit findings, need a structured response strategy.

Taxpayers with Foreign Income or Assets

Canadians with offshore accounts, foreign investments, or international income are facing CRA reviews related to foreign reporting requirements.

Taxpayers Seeking Voluntary Disclosure

Individuals and businesses across Canada with past compliance failures who want to come forward proactively before the CRA contacts them.

Common CRA Dispute Challenges We Help Canadian Taxpayers Solve

Unexpected CRA Audit Notices

Receiving a CRA audit letter without professional guidance on what to provide, how to respond, or how to protect yourself from an unfair outcome.

Incorrect or Inflated Reassessments

CRA reassessments that disallow legitimate deductions, apply the wrong tax treatment, or are based on incorrect assumptions about your income or activities.

Missed Objection Deadlines

Taxpayers who didn't know they could object, or whose objection deadline has passed, and who need to know whether an extension of time is still available. That option closes one year after the deadline expires. Where the 90 days has passed, an application to extend the time to object can be made — but only within one year after the objection deadline expired."

Unreported Income & Unfiled Returns

A taxpayer wants to address past compliance failures proactively through the CRA's Voluntary Disclosure Program before being contacted.

CRA Collections Enforcement

Aggressive CRA collection action, including wage garnishments, frozen accounts, or property liens, requiring immediate professional intervention.

Accumulated Penalties & Interest

Large CRA penalty and interest balances that have built up over time may qualify for full or partial cancellation through a taxpayer relief application.

Frequently Asked Questions

We work with clients in every province and territory, almost entirely remotely

Do not ignore it, and do not respond without professional advice. CRA audit notices have strict deadlines, and how you respond can significantly affect the outcome. Contact The Tax Whiz as soon as you receive any CRA correspondence. We’ll review the notice, explain your rights, and take over the response process regardless of where you are in Canada.

A CRA reassessment is a revised determination of your tax liability that differs from your original return. If you disagree with a reassessment, you have the right to file a formal Notice of Objection. For a corporation, the deadline is 90 days from the day the notice of assessment or reassessment was sent. Individuals and graduated rate estates get the later of that 90 days or one year after the filing due date for the return in question — which is often considerably more time than people assume they have. Objections to GST/HST assessments work differently: 90 days for everyone, with no extended period for individuals. The Tax Whiz prepares and files objections for Canadian taxpayers nationwide, challenging incorrect or unfair reassessments.

If the deadline has already passed, you can apply for an extension of time to object — but that application has to be made within one year after the objection deadline expired. Once that year is gone, the assessment stands.”

Canada’s Voluntary Disclosure Program allows eligible taxpayers to correct past compliance failures, such as unreported income or unfiled returns, and receive relief from penalties and potential prosecution. To qualify, the disclosure must be voluntary before the CRA becomes aware of the issue. The Tax Whiz guides clients across Canada through the VDP process, assessing eligibility and preparing comprehensive applications.

Processing times vary significantly. Simple objections may be resolved in several months, while complex files can take 12 to 24 months or longer. During this period, collection action on a disputed income tax amount is generally postponed for individuals. Large corporations remain collectible on half the disputed amount, and disputed GST/HST is not subject to the same restriction — the CRA can continue collecting it.” Currently stated as a general rule when it isn’t.. The Tax Whiz keeps clients informed throughout the process and pursues escalation options if unreasonable delays occur.

Yes. We represent Canadian taxpayers in every province through secure virtual services. Whether you’re in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, or the Atlantic provinces, you receive the same level of expert CRA dispute representation. Distance is not a barrier to getting the professional help you need.

Normal reassessment period of three years for individuals and CCPCs, four for other corporations, from the date of the original notice of assessment; no limit where there has been misrepresentation attributable to neglect, carelessness or wilful default.
